AUG: 1st Saturday Serve (Disaster Response; Education)

On August 3, volunteers worked at two locations on opposite ends of Lafayette for this month’s “1st Saturday Serve.” On the south side of town, we partnered with Our Savior’s Church-Lafayette to beautify Comeaux High School. Dozens of volunteers worked for several hours to pressure wash the outdoor commons areas, mulch around all the shade trees and replace discolored ceiling tiles in classrooms. Our goal was to enhance the learning environment for students in the new year, and to ultimately affect their engagement and sense of pride in their school, which usually results in better outcomes.

Across town, our disaster response volunteers chainsawed and removed part of a tree that had fallen at The Outreach Center. Along with the Center’s director, Bruce Gilcrease, and his son who joined in, a group of volunteers cut and hauled off piles of debris so the Center could get back to safely providing shelter, housing services and street outreach. Thanks to all who served to make an impact. You succeeded!
