Record-breaking freezing temperatures in January caused Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) and Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness to open a warming shelter for people in our community with inadequate heat. Love Acadiana staff and volunteers helped to welcome and register guests arriving at the George Dupuis Recreation Center while the shelter was open then at the last minute were made aware of another need.
Within just 18 hours of a request from LCG, more than 20 eager volunteers showed up Saturday morning to help clean and reset the space for community use. Together, we cleaned cots, windows, floors, bathrooms, and furniture to help LCG staff, who had been working tirelessly to operate the shelter round the clock. Thank you to everyone who showed up to make a difference!
